The 1951 Festival of Britain: Brave New World, Wednesday, 23.00, BBC4

One sub-plot of the past few years has been the upcoming so-called Festival of Brexit, which you may be surprised to learn is actually already taking place, although we’re not sure anyone’s noticed. It’s called Unboxed now, and the intention has been to create something like the famous Festival of Britain, although it’s already been criticised as being particularly vague, with the Jubilee and Commonwealth Games being co-opted into it and various art happenings that don’t really seem to have added up to a coherent whole just yet. It will certainly have to go some to top the 1951 festival, which aimed to showcase a new, more confident Britain rising up from the depression of the War, and is still fondly remembered by those who attended today, plus its legacy can be seen to this day on the South Bank of the Thames. Here’s another outing for the doc from a decade ago which attempts to illustrate what a grand occasion it all was.
