Eurovision Song Contest Semi-Final, Tuesday, 20.00, BBC3

So yes, back to Italy for Eurovision for the first time since 1991, a hugely memorable contest which became very much the continental equivalent of Brits 89, a show on a revolting set and packed with missed cues, baffling production decisions and endless cock-ups, inelegantly marshalled by the previous year’s champ Toto Cutugno who couldn’t speak English or French (Tel: “It was a sorry day for all of us when this man won last year!”) and brilliantly ending in a draw where nobody had a clue what happened next. Eurovision all very different now, of course, though Italian TV is still a bit of a law unto itself so it’ll be fascinating to see what we get over the next few nights. This is the one we can’t vote in, on Thursday we can and that’s when we’ll also hear from our man Sam Ryder who apparently might even bloody win the thing.
