Eurovision Song Contest, Saturday, 20.00, BBC1
It doesn’t happen all that often, but it’s always brilliant when it does – the Cup Final and Eurovision on the same day! That’s always a great occasion, and especially now the former is a teatime kick-off we get the additional excitement of wondering if there’ll be a never-ending penalty shoot-out which will make the timings incredibly tight, and given Liverpool and Chelsea did that when they met in the League Cup Final earlier this year, it’s fingers crossed. As we said last week, we’re really looking forward to this year’s Eurovision as it’s in Italy and last time they held it in 1991 it really was quite something. These days Eurovision rather runs itself and so there isn’t quite the opportunity for Italian TV to go completely off-piste and it’ll probably be a bit more boringly professional than that memorable show, but still good fun we’re sure. And the whole night could end up with the UK actually winning the bloody thing, as we’re one of the favourites with a very credible performer and song, which was on the Radio 1 playlist before it was announced as our entrant, so there’s a chance it could be even more exciting than usual. And if all else fails there’s always the fun of the news after midnight with the newsreader getting to say good morning at the start. What a day it’s going to be.
