Married Indian Couple Files Multi-Million-Dollar Lawsuit Against Their Son For Not Having Any Grandchildren

Some real-life stories are indeed stranger than fiction—and that includes this story out of India surrounding a couple who have sued their son for not providing them with grandchildren. The couple’s lawsuit cites that due to all the money they have spent on their son throughout the course of his life, he should have given them grandchildren by now.

@CNN reports, Indian couple Sadhana and Sanjeev Prasad, who reside in Haridwar, a northern city in Uttarakhand, have filed a formal lawsuit against their son, 35 and his wife, 31 because the two have yet to produce a grandchild despite being married for the last six years. The couple is suing for 50 million rupees, which factors out to around $643,000 in USD. The Prasads claim that over the course of his life, they spent 20 million rupees (around $257,000) raising their son, who is also the couple’s only child.

Arvind Srivastava, who is Sadhana and Sanjeev’s legal representative, says

“They raised him, educated him, made him capable, made him a pilot — which was expensive. They see people in their neighborhood playing with their grandchildren and feel like they should also have one. They said they didn’t marry (their son and daughter-in-law) off so that they can live alone. So, they said that in the next year, either give us a grandchild or give us compensation.”

Although this lawsuit may seem unbelievable, the issue of familial obligation in India has been at the center of controversy for years. In Indian culture, carrying the family lineage and caring for elderly parents and in-laws is often regarded as a filial duty.

Srivastava also added that without grandchildren, the couple says “there is no-one to take care of them [as they age]” and “all parents wish to be grandparents one day.”
