Meghan Markle Uses New Jewelry to Send Message About Abortion Rights

As you’ve surely heard by now, the Supreme Court has voted to overturn Roe v. Wade, the landmark 1973 decision that protected the reproductive rights of American women for nearly 50 years.

Countless public figures have spoken out against the reversal, including one of the most influential women on the planet, the Duchess of Sussex, Meghan Markle.

Meghan gave an interview to Vogue shortly after the court’s decision was announced.

It’s not common for any member of the royal family to weigh in on political matters so soon after a controversy situation develops, but Meghan made it clear that these were abnormal circumstances.

“Men need to be vocal in this moment and beyond because these are decisions that affect relationships, families, and communities at large,” the duchess said.

“They may target women, but the consequences impact all of us. My husband and I talked about that a lot over the past few days. He’s a feminist too,” she continued.

“His reaction last week was guttural, like mine.”

Needless to say, Meghan didn’t mince words.

She spoke from the heart and made it clear that this is an issue that’s of vital importance to both her and her husband.

The royal family might prefer that Meghan shy away from such matters and generally live a more apolitical life, but clearly, that won’t be happening anytime soon.

According to a new report from People magazine, Meghan has been sporting a symbolic piece of jewelry in recent weeks.

To the untrained eye, it might appear to be nothing more than a simple but elegant pinky ring.

But the designer of the piece intended for it to serve as a symbol of the ongoing fight for women’s rights.

Entrepreneur and activist Shilpa Yarlagadda says she designed the 1972 Tennis Pinky Ring in commemoration of Title IX, the federal law that protects the rights of women to play sports in high school and college.

“Through 50% of our profits, we are investing in female founders and companies that empower women,” Yarlagadda, 25, tells People.

“So far we’ve funded 11 incredible female-founded companies.”

Yarlagadda said she was inspired to create the ring after being “educated on how much inequality there is for women in the sports field.”

“Pay parity and equal pay is still a huge issue in sports,” she says.

“Tennis is one of the few sports that has equal prize money for women, which is why we are calling this the 1972 Tennis Pinky Ring.”

Meghan has been wearing the ring in public for several weeks now, which means she’s been sporting it since before the Supreme Court’s Roe decision was announced.

But as many have pointed out, the Duchess began showing off her symbolic ring around the same time that a leaked draft of the decision was made public.

Many have also noted that the Roe decision and the passage of Title IX occurred within one year of each other, and Meghan might be hoping to help usher in a similarly progressive era 50 years later.

Whatever the case, there’s no doubt about where Meghan stands on the issues most affecting women in 2022.

And it seems that she plans to continue sending her message in whatever way she can.
