A North Carolina Chick-Fil-A Receives Backlash After Trying To Recruit Volunteers To Work & Pay Them In Food

While businesses struggle to hire employees, a Chick-fil-A in North Carolina thought it would be easier to find “volunteers” and pay them in food, but people on social media didn’t think so.

On Tuesday, the company posted a message on Facebook, stating that it was seeking volunteers to work, and in return, they would receive up to five entrees

Chick fil-A Asks for Volunteers

In a now deleted Facebook post, the Hendersonville location wrote:

We are looking for volunteers for our new Drive Thru Express! Earn 5 free entrees per shift (1 hr) worked. Message us for details.

People on social media responded and were not too fond of the idea.

Chick-fil-A’s owners are worth $14 billion. The average location makes $8.1 million annually, up 15% in a year.

They’re asking people in North Carolina to “volunteer” without pay (but they get chicken sandwiches).

A spokesperson from Chick-fil-A told Insider:

Most restaurants are individually owned and operated, and it was a program at an individually owned restaurant.

Hendersonville Chick-fil-A Responds to the Backlash

After the backlash, the location also responded in a post and wrote:

Thanks for everyone’s concern on this matter. This is a volunteer based opportunity, which means people can opt in to volunteer if they think it’s a good fit for them. We’ve had multiple people sign up and enjoy doing and have done it multiple times. People who sign up for this chose it voluntarily. We are still hiring full time and part time team members, so if you are interested in working in our store, we pay $19/hr.
