Among these are four titles making their TCM debuts: the 1975 horror/mystery The Spiral Staircase, costarring Christopher Plummer; the 1976 crime thriller St. Ives, led by Charles Bronson; Believe in Me, a 1971 romantic drama; and The Grasshopper (1970), a drama costarring Jim Brown and Joseph Cotten. When Mexican-born Luis Antonio Dámaso de Alonso found his way to Hollywood in his late teens and began appearing as an extra in silent films, he chose his screen name — Gilbert Roland — by combining the names of his favorite actors, John Gilbert and Ruth Roland. He went on to become at least as famous a movie star as they were, often as a “Latin lover” character early on, but also in more substantive later roles during his seven-decade career. Roland gets his first Summer Under the Stars salute on Turner Classic Movies today with a 14-film lineup of titles that begins with the 1930 drama Men of the North. The day also includes the 1952 drama The Bad and the Beautiful, which earned the actor a Golden Globe nomination; some of his notable adventure films, like 1953’s Beneath the 12-Mile Reef and Thunder Bay; two of the series of Westerns in which Roland famously portrayed the Cisco Kid, both making their TCM premieres: Beauty and the Bandit (1946) and Robin Hood of Monterey (1947); and more.

Take a seat (and prepare to be on the edge of it) as MOVIES! presents four classics from the legendary Master of Suspense, director Alfred Hitchcock, made during his Hollywood filmmaking heyday in the 1940s and ’50s. Up first is Lifeboat (1944), a survival drama set entirely aboard the titular craft that is carrying survivors of a torpedoed ship. Hitchcock received a Best Director Oscar nomination for the film, whose cast is led by Tallulah Bankhead, William Bendix, Walter Slezak and Mary Anderson. Following that is The Wrong Man (1956), a rare film from Hitch in that it is a docudrama largely taken from a real-life incident about an innocent man (Henry Fonda) wrongly charged with a crime. Vera Miles costars. Next is 1951’s Strangers on a Train, a thrilling adaptation of Patricia Highsmith’s novel in which pro tennis player Guy Haines (Farley Granger) has the bad luck of sitting next to a man named Bruno Antony (Robert Walker in a memorably chilling performance) on a train and getting drawn into his deranged and murderous orbit. Finally, Grace Kelly, Ray Milland and Robert Cummings lead Dial M for Murder (1954), in which a former tennis star plots to have his adulterous wife killed.

Summer Under the Stars: Marilyn Monroe

This month marks the 60th anniversary of the all-too-soon passing of actress Norma Jeane Mortenson — best known as legendary screen star Marilyn Monroe — who died at age 36 on Aug. 4, 1962. So it is especially fitting that the icon makes her return to Turner Classic Movies’ annual August Summer Under the Stars event. Today’s lineup includes 12 titles that show how Monroe will live forever thanks to her mesmerizing presence on the big screen. It kicks off with Ladies of the Chorus, a 1949 musical featuring Monroe in her first starring role, followed by another of her early appearances, in the drama The Asphalt Jungle (1950), which helped critics and audiences begin to really take notice of her. Among the other highlights today are The Seven Year Itch (1955), the romantic comedy that earned Monroe a BAFTA Award nomination as “the Girl” and gave us the iconic scene of her standing over a subway grate as her white dress billows up; Bus Stop (1956), the comedy/drama with a Golden Globe-nominated performance from Monroe; Billy Wilder’s famed comedy Some Like It Hot (1959), boasting a Golden Globe-winning performance from the actress; and the romantic comedy The Prince and the Showgirl (1957), the first movie produced by the star’s company, Marilyn Monroe Productions, in which she delivered another BAFTA-nominated performance.
