The Last Movie Stars, Tuesday, 21.00, Sky Documentaries

Here’s a high concept doc and no mistake. It’s all based around Paul Newman’s plans about 25 years ago to write his autobiography, so he arranged a series of interviews with significant people in his life to help him put it together. But after a while he went off the idea, abandoned it and destroyed the tapes. The transcripts of those tapes still exist, though, and so Ethan Hawke has roped in a few of his famous friends – and he’s not messing around, with Laura Linney, Mark Ruffalo and George Clooney taking part – to read them, mixed with rare footage of Newman and Joanne Woodward in their personal and professional life. Clearly it’s a labour of love for Hawke, and apparently the finished result works very well indeed. Let’s have a look at it, then.
