TCM Memorial Tribute: James Caan
TCM, beginning at 8pm
Catch a Classic!

Bronx born, with leading man looks and surprising depth, James Caan doggedly plied his craft on the stage and screen until a series of pithy roles turned the bit player into a rising star and then an icon. Audiences first took notice as the newcomer ably held his own alongside Hollywood heroes John Wayne and Robert Mitchum in the 1966 Howard Hawks Western El Dorado. But Caan’s star power became evident when viewers and critics alike were moved to tears as the once-aspiring pro footballer put in an Emmy-nominated performance as cancer-stricken Chicago Bears running back Brian Piccolo in 1971’s Emmy-winning made-for-TV film Brian’s Song. Director Francis Ford Coppola cemented Caan’s star status when he cast him as the eldest Corleone offspring, hotheaded Sonny, in the masterpiece mob drama The Godfather. TCM honors the late actor with a quintet of films that display Caan’s wide-ranging talents, beginning with Coppola’s 1969 road movie, The Rain People, costarring Shirley Knight and Robert Duvall. Next, Caan plays a professional jewel snatcher tiring of his trade in Thief (1981) and then a sailor with a heart of gold in the Oscar-nominated Cinderella Liberty (1973). The buddy-cop action dramedy Freebie and the Bean (1974) paired Caan with Alan Arkin to surprising comic effect, while the crime caper Slither (1973) returns him to the wrong side of the law as a car thief bent on recovering a murdered pal’s cash.

TCM Spotlight: Royal Treatments, British Royalty Part 1
TCM, beginning at 8pm
Catch a Classic!

The British monarchy has long been a source of American fascination and filmmakers’ inspiration. With the royal family once again making headlines as it ushers in a modern new chapter, TCM celebrates those who came before them with a back-to-back slate of aristocratic entertainment. The regal lineup begins with the Oscar-winning The Lion in Winter (1968), starring Peter O’Toole as King Henry II and Katharine Hepburn as his queen, a royal couple at odds about which of their three sons should be heir to the throne. Next, Anne of the Thousand Days (1969) stars a fiery Richard Burton as King Henry VIII, elegant Irene Papas as the beleaguered Queen Catherine and a luminous Genevieve Bujold as savvy, spirited and doomed Anne Boleyn in the familiar tale of the Tudor’s volatile clash of politics, romance and religion as the Church of England took tumultuous shape. Then, Lady Jane (1986) examines the life of a woman who spent even less time on the throne than did Anne. Helena Bonham Carter stars as Lady Jane Grey, who, forced into a marriage of convenience and others’ ambitions, finds true love and her own powerful nature in the transaction. Cary Elwes and Patrick Stewart costar. King Henry VIII’s prolific, sometimes murderous love life is also front and center in The Private Life of Henry the VIII (1933), which chronicles his relationship with each of his six wives. Mary of Scotland (1936), directed by John Ford and starring Katharine Hepburn as the title character, spotlights the dangerous and divisive power struggle between Scotland’s dethroned Queen Mary and England’s jealous Queen Elizabeth Tudor (Florence Eldridge). Eldridge’s husband, Fredric March, costars. The tribute ends on a musical note with Stanley Donen’s beloved and irresistible Royal Wedding (1951). Adventures in Egypt
TCM, beginning at 8pm
Catch a Classic!

He’s arguably history’s most famous pharaoh, made a king at age 9, dead 10 years later and buried in a solid gold coffin in 1324 B.C., surrounded by priceless riches. And though most royal tombs were discovered and stripped of their treasures, the whereabouts of King Tutankhamun’s burial chamber remained a mystery until Egyptologist Howard Carter and his team stumbled upon it on Nov. 4, 1922. Since then, “King Tut” and decades of explorers’ Egyptian adventures have been the stuff of legend — and plenty of attention from Hollywood. TCM celebrates the centennial of Carter’s monumental discovery with five cinematic offerings set among the myths, mysteries and monuments of the African locale. Up first is the Robert Taylor-Eleanor Parker starrer Valley of the Kings (1954), which filmed in Egypt and follows the danger-filled adventures of archaeologist Mark Brandon (Taylor), who teams up with brave and beautiful Ann Mercedes (Parker) to fulfill her father’s mission to find Pharaoh Rahotep’s tomb. Next, the MGM short film Ancient Egypt (1938) — part of documentary filmmaker James FitzPatrick’s “Traveltalks” series — sweeps across the Valley of the Kings to Tut’s tomb, the ancient city of Thebes and other historical sites, revealing their significance to modern times. Then, no name is more synonymous with horror than Boris Karloff, and his turn as the lovelorn title character in The Mummy (1932) keeps the film a creepy classic nearly a century later. Next up, come to Howard Hawks’ Land of the Pharaohs (1955) for Joan Collins as nubile Princess Nellifer and stay for the William Faulkner-penned epic tale centered on how ancient King Khufu’s obsession with his death led to the creation of the Great Pyramid of Giza. Then wrap up your Egyptian adventures with another of FitzPatrick’s travelogues, Cairo: City of Contrast (1938).

Five Oscars, including Best Picture, went to Best Director Oscar winner William Friedkin’s highly acclaimed and realistic 1971 crime drama, which is based on the true story of New York City narcotics detective Eddie Egan, dramatized here as Jimmy “Popeye” Doyle (portrayed by Best Actor Oscar winner Gene Hackman). The adapted screenplay by Ernest Tidyman, which also won an Oscar, sparkles under Friedkin’s direction as it follows Doyle and fellow detective Buddy “Cloudy” Russo (Best Supporting Actor Oscar nominee Roy Scheider) as they use sharp instincts and unconventional methods to thwart the international suppliers of New York’s heroin trade. The film’s cinematography and sound were also nominated for Oscars, and their excellence is particularly on display during the movie’s legendary car chase, often cited as one of the greatest ever filmed, with Doyle commandeering a civilian’s car for a frantic pursuit of an elevated train on which a hitman is trying to escape and creative camerawork enhancing the thrills and sensation of speeding through the streets of a densely crowded big-city borough.
