He’s arguably history’s most famous pharaoh, made a king at age 9, dead 10 years later and buried in a solid gold coffin in 1324 B.C., surrounded by priceless riches. And though most royal tombs were discovered and stripped of their treasures, the whereabouts of King Tutankhamun’s burial chamber remained a mystery until Egyptologist Howard Carter and his team stumbled upon it on Nov. 4, 1922. Since then, “King Tut” and decades of explorers’ Egyptian adventures have been the stuff of legend — and plenty of attention from Hollywood. TCM celebrates the centennial of Carter’s monumental discovery with five cinematic offerings set among the myths, mysteries and monuments of the African locale. Up first is the Robert Taylor-Eleanor Parker starrer Valley of the Kings (1954), which filmed in Egypt and follows the danger-filled adventures of archaeologist Mark Brandon (Taylor), who teams up with brave and beautiful Ann Mercedes (Parker) to fulfill her father’s mission to find Pharaoh Rahotep’s tomb. Next, the MGM short film Ancient Egypt (1938) — part of documentary filmmaker James FitzPatrick’s “Traveltalks” series — sweeps across the Valley of the Kings to Tut’s tomb, the ancient city of Thebes and other historical sites, revealing their significance to modern times. Then, no name is more synonymous with horror than Boris Karloff, and his turn as the lovelorn title character in The Mummy (1932) keeps the film a creepy classic nearly a century later. Next up, come to Howard Hawks’ Land of the Pharaohs (1955) for Joan Collins as nubile Princess Nellifer and stay for the William Faulkner-penned epic tale centered on how ancient King Khufu’s obsession with his death led to the creation of the Great Pyramid of Giza. Then wrap up your Egyptian adventures with another of FitzPatrick’s travelogues, Cairo: City of Contrast (1938).

Next, the Steve McQueen/Faye Dunaway-led 1968 heist film The Thomas Crown Affair begins with influential film title designer Pablo Ferro’s famed multi-dynamic image montage set to Michel Legrand’s Oscar-winning song “The Windmills of Your Mind.” The Cary Grant/Audrey Hepburn 1963 romantic comedy/mystery Charade is next, and it kicks off with animated titles by Maurice Binder, who would also become known for his James Bond title sequences. Another animated title sequence from a legendary designer opens the next film: Saul Bass’ intro to the Frank Sinatra-led drama The Man With the Golden Arm (1955). Rounding out the lineup early tomorrow morning are the action classic Shaft (1971), which opens with Isaac Hayes’ Oscar-winning theme song; Kiss Me Deadly (1955), a film noir that is unique in many ways, including its backward title sequence; and The Thing From Another World (1951), the sci-fi/horror classic whose opening credits — featuring the letters of its title slowly burning through the background and accompanied by Dimitri Tiomkin’s ominous score — not only established its own story’s eerie ambiance very well, but also added to the terror in John Carpenter’s Halloween nearly 30 years later when the sequence was featured in a scene.

The daughter of an entertainer mother, Dorothy Jean Dandridge began singing as a small child, performing with her sister and eventually landing gigs at popular spots such as the Cotton Club, the Apollo Theater and the London Palladium. Soon enough, Hollywood came calling for the beautiful young chanteuse, and though her staunch refusal to be typecast slowed her film career, she continued to appear on the big screen, often as a performer, until pithier (and sometimes scandalous for their time) roles came her way. In 1955, Dandridge became the first Black woman to be nominated for an Academy Award for her spellbinding turn as the lead character in Otto Preminger’s adaptation of Oscar Hammerstein’s Carmen Jones (1954). Though personal and professional turmoil would lead to her premature death at age 42 in 1965, Dandridge’s legacy lives on, and tonight TCM celebrates what would have been her 100th birthday with a six-film retrospective beginning with that Oscar-noticed role. Up next, Bright Road (1953), culled from a Ladies Home Journal true story, features Dandridge as devoted teacher Jane Richards, who refuses to give up on a troubled boy. Dandridge’s Carmen Jones costar Harry Belafonte also stars. Based on the Alec Waugh novel and filmed on location in the British West Indies, Island in the Sun (1957) again unites Dandridge and Belafonte in the bold tale of race relations, politics and matters of the heart on a fictional Caribbean island. James Mason, Joan Fontaine and Joan Collins also appear. In the controversial Tamango (1958), Dandridge plays an African slave torn between the chance for freedom and her loyalty to fellow slaves captured by her secret lover, Dutch sea captain John Reiker. Dandridge and Mason reunite in The Decks Ran Red (1958), which places a gutsy Dandridge among a mostly male cast in the tale of murder and mutiny on the high seas. Finally, Dandridge plays an African queen who must count on Lex Barker’s legendary jungle warrior to protect her people from gunrunners and a rival tribe in Tarzan’s Peril (1951). The film was praised for its convincing integration of footage shot in Kenya and America.

But this week, we finally meet the absentee sibling.
