Top of the Pops, Friday, 19.30, BBC4

No Terence Trent D’Arby because he’s ill, no U2 because of “unforeseen circumstances”, it’s almost as if nobody wants to go on this programme. You didn’t miss much if you watched the England game, the highlight being the list of all the places you could get your 3D glasses from including, of course, Stewarts and Crazy Prices in Northern Ireland. Just the one this week, and the first week without Meat Loaf at number one, so instead it’s, er… Meat Loaf? Yes, because Bat out of Hell’s been re-released as well. His reign of terror at number one, and that U2 video last week, emphasised that one of the worst things about this era is records being played all the way to the bitter end (“you can have the exclusive if you play all of it”) but this week we’ve probably gone a bit too far in the opposite direction with a whopping eight breakers. And if you’ve bailed out of this year, Big Hits 1993 follows at eight to sum it all up in a slightly more palatable hour.
