Piano Greats at the BBC, Saturday, 21.15, BBC2

Giles Smith in his ace book Lost in Music said it was always a great regret of his that the only instrument he showed any aptitude on was the keyboard, as while there were endless cool-looking axe heroes to model yourself on, the most famous keyboard player was Tony Banks of Genesis, the most boring man in rock whose idea of showmanship during a solo was to nod along quietly. As Smith said, if Elton John played the guitar instead, he wouldn’t have had to try so hard with all those silly outfits. Still, enough people made a name for themselves on the keys to get ninety minutes of clippage in this new compilation, from Little Richard to Lady Gaga.
