The medical drama comes to an end after five seasons with two back-to-back episodes tonight. First, in “Right Place,” Max (Ryan Eggold) and Wilder (Sandra Mae Frank) face a dilemma over approvals for a revolutionary cancer drug as Max learns a secret about his own bout with cancer; Reynolds (Jocko Sims) goes the extra mile to correct a dire medical situation; and Iggy (Tyler Labine) tries desperately to help a woman in need, but finds the system is working against him. Then, everyone’s story reaches a surprising, yet inevitable, conclusion in the series finale episode, “How Can I Help?”

This follow-up to NBC’s 1984-92 sitcom Night Court stars Melissa Rauch as eternally optimistic Judge Abby Stone, who follows in the footsteps of her revered late father, Judge Harry Stone (played in the original series by Harry Anderson, who passed away in 2018), when she takes on the challenge of overseeing the night shift of a Manhattan arraignment court. John Larroquette reprises his multiple Emmy-winning role of Dan Fielding, who this time is enlisted as the court’s public defender, rather than prosecutor. The comedy launches with back-to-back episodes.

Finding Your Roots With Henry Louis Gates Jr.: “Secret Lives”

TCM continues its January celebration of the scandal-plagued silent film actress Marion Davies. This appropriately nicknamed “Queen of the Screen” returns tonight beginning with The Bachelor Father (1931), a redemption story of a curmudgeonly old man who invites his three illegitimate adult children to live with him, followed by Five and Ten (1931), based on the 1929 Fannie Hurst novel of the same name, in which a young woman named Jenny (Davies) moves to New York City with her family and falls in love with an engaged man. A scandalous love triangle is the focus of the next film, Blondie of the Follies (1932), in which the friendship between two young women (Davies and Billie Dove) begins to fall apart when one wins a role in a Broadway show and the other’s boyfriend (Robert Montgomery) falls for her. Polly of the Circus (1932), a film adaptation of the play by Margaret Mayo, finds Davies playing an injured trapeze performer opposite the iconic Clark Gable, who plays a minister and a love interest. Davies is a love-struck teacher who pursues a radio singer (the legendary Bing Crosby) to Hollywood and gets hired to join a chorus in Going Hollywood (1933), then, lastly, in Operator 13 (1934), Davies plays Gail Loveless, a spy who meets and falls in love with a Confederate captain (Gary Cooper) during the Civil War.

The Rookie: Feds: “Out for Blood”

As the unit investigates a murder victim whose body has been drained of blood, the gruesome case catches the attention of a true crime show, and Brendon (Kevin Zegers) shares his “Vampire Cop” expertise to help solve the case.

American Experience: “Zora Neale Hurston: Claiming a Space”
PBS, 9pm
This biography explores the life of author Zora Neale Hurston, whose groundbreaking anthropological work would challenge assumptions about race, gender and cultural superiority. Best remembered for her novel Their Eyes Were Watching God, Hurston was a key figure of the Harlem Renaissance. But even as she gained renown as a writer, she pursued anthropological studies at Barnard College, becoming the college’s first Black female graduate, and throughout her career, she struggled for recognition in two worlds — literary and scientific.

The weight-loss struggles and daily lives of sisters Amy Slaton-Halterman and Tammy Slaton of Dixon, Kentucky, have been the focus of TLC’s reality series, now in its fourth season. With baby No. 2 on the way, Amy feels her family is complete, but soon realizes being an overweight mom may prove to be too much.

A tale of redemption is at the heart of the 1980 musical comedy film The Blues Brothers, which stars John Belushi and Dan Aykroyd as brothers in Chicago who set out on a mission to prevent the foreclosure of the orphanage where they were raised by getting their blues band back together. The characters were developed from a recurring musical sketch on the long-running NBC series Saturday Night Live. The Bank Dick (1940) stars W.C. Fields, who also wrote the screenplay, as a California drunk who accidentally thwarts a bank robbery and ends up a security guard there. In the following film, the Oscar-winning comedy It’s a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World (1963) starring Ethel Merman and Milton Berle, a reckless driver causes a massive traffic jam in the California desert and in his dying breath admits to a hidden stolen fortune, causing the other motorists to travel across the state in search of it.

The Goldbergs: “Amadoofus”

Barring mixed emotions from the family, a special someone express their infatuation with Beverly (Wendi McLendon-Covey). Meanwhile, Dave Kim (Kenny Ridwan) returns to Jenkintown with some exciting news.

In the series premiere episode, an ’81 Camaro Z28 covered in dirt and filth needs a major transformation to get it back on the road, and a ’72 Ford Maverick encrusted with years of mold and debris must be meticulously revitalized for a client with sentimental attachment.

Chicago P.D.: “I Can Let You Go”

Turner Classic Movies concludes its Friday evening salute to fictional female film detectives this evening with four films. First is Lured (1947), a film noir offering a change of pace for fans of Lucille Ball who are accustomed to seeing her in more comedic roles. Ball plays an American in London who helps police find a serial killer after her friend disappears. George Sanders, Charles Coburn and Boris Karloff costar in director Douglas Sirk’s mystery. Next, in Wanted! Jane Turner (1936), both criminals and two postal investigators (played by Gloria Stuart and Lee Tracy) are intent on locating the “Jane Turner” to whom a letter and loads of cash were sent in the wake of a mail robbery. Following that is one of the earliest noir films, Stranger on the Third Floor (1940), in which Margaret Tallichet plays the fiancée of a reporter (John McGuire) who is arrested following two murders; in an attempt to clear his name, she seeks out a strange man (Peter Lorre) who seems linked to the crimes. Finally, in Deadline at Dawn (1946), Susan Hayward plays a dance-hall girl who embarks on an eventful evening as she helps a soon-to-ship-out sailor (Bill Williams) find the person who murdered a woman he had met earlier.

This follow-up to one of Lifetime’s most successful true-crime movies shows a new side of the infamous murderess. Celina Sinden stars as Jodi Arias, who has just been arrested and sent to prison while she awaits trial for murdering her boyfriend, Travis Alexander. When she arrives in jail, Jodi charms her way through prison and befriends a couple, Donavan Bering and Tracy Brown, who will do almost anything for her. Donavan was released from prison as Jodi’s trial drew near and agreed to be Jodi’s mouthpiece, posting on her social pages and defending her friend to the world. But when the details of the case and Jodi’s story were no longer adding up and Donavan refused to continue to do her former friend’s bidding, Jodi’s vengeful side emerged.

Hollywood golden age icons Jean Harlow and William Powell had not only a dynamic chemistry onscreen in the two films they made together, but also a real-life love affair that only lasted a couple of years before Harlow tragically passed away from kidney failure in 1937 at the age of 26. Tonight on Turner Classic Movies, you can enjoy the magic they brought to the screen in Reckless (1935), a musical comedy directed by Victor Fleming and also starring frequent Harlow costar Franchot Tone; and Libeled Lady (1936), the Best Picture Oscar-nominated romantic comedy costarring Myrna Loy and Spencer Tracy.

Rico to the Rescue: “Our Contractor Is at the Neighbors”
