This follow-up to one of Lifetime’s most successful true-crime movies shows a new side of the infamous murderess. Celina Sinden stars as Jodi Arias, who has just been arrested and sent to prison while she awaits trial for murdering her boyfriend, Travis Alexander. When she arrives in jail, Jodi charms her way through prison and befriends a couple, Donavan Bering and Tracy Brown, who will do almost anything for her. Donavan was released from prison as Jodi’s trial drew near and agreed to be Jodi’s mouthpiece, posting on her social pages and defending her friend to the world. But when the details of the case and Jodi’s story were no longer adding up and Donavan refused to continue to do her former friend’s bidding, Jodi’s vengeful side emerged.

Hollywood golden age icons Jean Harlow and William Powell had not only a dynamic chemistry onscreen in the two films they made together, but also a real-life love affair that only lasted a couple of years before Harlow tragically passed away from kidney failure in 1937 at the age of 26. Tonight on Turner Classic Movies, you can enjoy the magic they brought to the screen in Reckless (1935), a musical comedy directed by Victor Fleming and also starring frequent Harlow costar Franchot Tone; and Libeled Lady (1936), the Best Picture Oscar-nominated romantic comedy costarring Myrna Loy and Spencer Tracy.

Rico to the Rescue: “Our Contractor Is at the Neighbors”

In real life, many of us may grumble a bit when called upon to serve on jury duty, and might find the process dull. But in the world of the movies, stories and scenes focused on juries can offer plenty of dramatic excitement and suspense, as evidenced in tonight’s double feature on Turner Classic Movies. First up is the most famous film focused on a jury: the Best Picture Oscar-nominated 12 Angry Men (1957). Best Director nominee Sidney Lumet’s tense courtroom drama takes us into the deliberations of jury members (given the era, the jury is comprised entirely of 12 white men) in a New York City murder trial. When Juror 8 (Henry Fonda, also a producer) is initially the only one who expresses a skeptical caution, the others are frustrated even as they are forced to more carefully consider the evidence before jumping to a hasty verdict. Lee J. Cobb, Ed Begley, E.G. Marshall and Jack Warden costar. Second on tonight’s double bill is Perfect Strangers (1950), a romantic drama starring Ginger Rogers and Dennis Morgan as a divorcée and a married man who fall in love while serving on a sequestered jury during a murder trial.

Each stand-alone episode of this new anthology series opens in a courtroom on the accused without knowing their crime or how they ended up on trial. Told from the defendant’s point of view, the drama reveals how an ordinary person became caught up in an extraordinary situation as one wrong turn led to another. Guest stars include Michael Chiklis, Abigail Breslin, Rachel Bilson, Margo Martindale, Malcolm-Jamal Warner, Wendell Pierce and Keith Carradine. Following tonight’s premiere, the series airs Tuesdays beginning Jan. 24.

Some of the valuables appraised tonight include a 1929 New York Yankees partial-team-signed ball, a New Mexico mining league trophy and photos, and a Plains Indian child’s beaded shirt. One of these is estimated to be worth up to $200,000.

After the Apocalypse

Five memorable postapocalyptic and/or dystopic future films are the focus tonight on Turner Classic Movies, beginning with The Omega Man (1971), the second adaptation of Richard Matheson’s 1954 novel I Am Legend. Charlton Heston stars as one of the last survivors of a plague, who hunts — and is hunted by — plague victims who have been turned into mutants. Next, Ava Gardner, Gregory Peck, Fred Astaire and Anthony Perkins lead the Oscar-nominated On the Beach (1959), based on Nevil Shute’s novel about the aftermath of a nuclear war. After that is Logan’s Run (1976), set in a future society that at first appears utopian, but is actually revealed as a dystopia that maintains an equilibrium in its population and resource-consumption by killing everyone who reaches the age of 30. Michael York and Jenny Agutter star. The lineup concludes early tomorrow morning with No Blade of Grass (1970), cowritten, produced and directed by Cornel Wilde, and World Without End (1956).

The Burglars (1971), based on the David Goodis novel, brings us to Athens as a group of professional thieves plan to steal emeralds from a wealthy gem collector while a corrupt Greek inspector follows them, intending to get the emeralds for himself. And to finish up the night is The Fast and the Furious (1954), which follows a trucker (John Ireland) framed for murder who breaks out of jail and takes a woman (Dorothy Malone) driving a fast sports car hostage on his way from California to Mexico.

This production from Disney’s Onyx Collective is a six-part docuseries that expands upon the bestselling The 1619 Project: A New Origin Story, which was created by Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Nikole Hannah-Jones and The New York Times Magazine. In keeping with that original project, the series seeks to reframe our country’s history by placing the consequences of slavery and the contributions of Black Americans at the center of the national narrative. Hannah-Jones hosts the series, whose episodes — “Democracy,” “Race,” “Music,” “Capitalism,” “Fear” and “Justice” — are adapted from essays in the written project and examine how the legacy of slavery shapes different aspects of contemporary American life. The wolves are howling once again, calling for the return of banshees, werecoyotes, hellhounds, kitsunes and every other shapeshifter in the night. But only a werewolf like Scott McCall (Tyler Posey), no longer a teenager yet still an alpha, can both gather new allies and reunite trusted friends to fight back against what could be the most powerful and deadliest enemy they’ve ever faced. The cast also includes Tyler Hoechlin, Orny Adams, Linden Ashby, JR Bourne, Seth Gilliam and Melissa Ponzio.

TV’s most iconic vampire slayer and a new whirl on werewolves? Howl, yes! But though this scarefest is from Teen Wolf creator Jeff Davis, it’s not a spinoff. The series is headlined by genre queen Sarah Michelle Gellar (Buffy the Vampire Slayer) as Los Angeles Fire Department investigator Kristin Ramsey, who is hot to catch an arsonist behind a rash of local wildfires. In the pilot, after flames trap a school bus in the woods with teens Blake (Bella Shepard), Everett (Armani Jackson) and their classmates aboard, the kids are attacked by a fast, furry and ferocious something hiding amid the burning trees. With this, Ramsey’s case takes a new twist that leads her to the firestarter — but not before riding a collision course with ranger Garrett Briggs (Rodrigo Santoro, Westworld) and encountering a shocking secret.

Rian Johnson (Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery) is creator, writer, director and executive producer of this mystery-of-the-week series (with each of the 10 hourlong episodes featuring a self-contained puzzle) that re-creates the feel of a classic detective show. Natasha Lyonne, who is also an EP, plays Charlie, a woman with an extraordinary ability to determine when someone is lying. She hits the road in her ’69 Plymouth Barracuda, and at every stop she encounters a new cast of characters and strange crimes that she can’t help but solve, armed with little more than her special talent for deciphering deception. The various guest stars featured in the stand-alone stories include Adrien Brody, Benjamin Bratt, Chloë Sevigny, Clea DuVall, Ellen Barkin, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Judith Light, Lil Rel Howery, Luis Guzmán, Nick Nolte, Rhea Perlman, Tim Meadows and many others. The traumatic and challenging struggles of early 20th century Jews are at the heart of all the films airing tonight on TCM. Up first, a young Matthew Broderick stars as a Jewish teenager from New York in the 1988 comedy Biloxi Blues, about a group of Army recruits facing a merciless drill sergeant (Christopher Walken) in a Mississippi boot camp during World War II. This is followed by a film adaptation of the National Book Award-nominated Chaim Potok novel The Chosen (1981), about two Jewish teenagers in 1940s Brooklyn, one Hasidic and one not, as they grow into adulthood. Next up is another classic novel adaptation, this time Philip Roth’s controversial Portnoy’s Complaint (1972), which chronicles a neurotic Jewish bachelor’s stifling New Jersey upbringing and his subsequent failed relationships with various women. The Oscar-nominated French film The Last Metro (1980) tells the tale of a young actress who is keeping her Jewish theater owner husband hidden from the Nazis in 1942 German-occupied Paris, and following that is the original, non-musical Sholom Aleichem story adaptation that inspired Fiddler on the Roof, Tevya (1939), about an Orthodox Jewish family man in pogrom-era Ukraine who aims to keep his daughter from marrying a Christian.

Ignoring his training and ethics, he finds himself making huge, tumultuous changes to people’s lives … including his own. Harrison Ford, who in his long and famed career had not had a major role in a TV series until the current drama 1923 (which debuted in December and is still dropping new episodes on Paramount+), adds another one to his resumé as costar here. The cast also includes Christa Miller, Jessica Williams, Michael Urie, Luke Tennie and Lukita Maxwell. The first two episodes are available today; new episodes drop Fridays.

For nearly 20 years before he became most famous for his Emmy-nominated role as Dr. Richard Kimble in the classic 1963-67 television series The Fugitive, David Harold Meyer — better known as David Janssen — had a number of roles on the big screen, as supporting and lead characters. Three of the movies Janssen headlined prior to his TV stardom are airing tonight on Turner Classic Movies, starting with Hell to Eternity (1960), a biopic based on the actual experiences of World War II Marine Pfc. Guy Gabaldon (played by Jeffrey Hunter) and his heroic actions during the Battle of Saipan. Janssen costars as Gabaldon’s sergeant. After that is Ring of Fire (1961), an action drama led by Janssen as a deputy sheriff in Oregon who is taken hostage by robbery suspects as forest fires rage around them. Tonight’s third and final feature is Twenty Plus Two (1961), a mystery with Janssen as an investigator delving into a case involving the murdered fan club secretary of a famous movie star and a missing heiress. Jeanne Crain and Dina Merrill costar.

It’s a night of swashbuckling adventure as Turner Classic Movies presents a double feature of films led by Tyrone Power in some of the most action-filled and romantic performances for which he is best remembered. First is The Black Swan (1942), in which Power plays an ex-pirate who must contend with rowdy buccaneers and a love/hate relationship with an aristocratic woman (Maureen O’Hara) who is tougher than she seems. Second on tonight’s double bill is The Black Rose (1950), an American-British coproduction that stars Power as a disinherited 13th century Saxon nobleman who leaves Norman England with an archer friend (Jack Hawkins) to seek his fortune in the Far East. Orson Welles and Cécile Aubry costar.
