Turner Classic Movies’ monthlong celebration of Warner Bros.’ centennial continues with another Thursday evening of titles from legendary directors who helmed films for Warner, and there are two biggies tonight. First are two Westerns from the master of that genre, John Ford: The Searchers (1956), one of Ford’s famed collaborations with star John Wayne, and Sergeant Rutledge (1960), influential as one of the first mainstream American films to deal frankly with racism and to cast a Black actor (Woody Strode) in a starring role. Preceding these films is the 1951 Merrie Melodies animated short Drip-Along Daffy, a Western parody directed by Chuck Jones and starring Daffy Duck and Porky Pig. Concluding the evening are two of the last features from director Elia Kazan: the Best Picture Oscar-nominated drama America, America (1963), which earned Kazan Oscar nods for his direction and the screenplay he adapted from his own book, and The Arrangement (1969), a drama led by Kirk Douglas and Faye Dunaway that Kazan also adapted from his novel of the same name.

Warner Bros. 100th Anniversary: Shot for 3D
TCM, beginning at 12:15am (late-night)
Catch a Classic!

Turner Classic Movies’ celebration of Warner Bros.’ centennial enters a new dimension late this evening with three titles that the studio produced during the short-lived 3D movie craze that hit Hollywood in the early 1950s. Unfortunately, these titles won’t actually be airing in 3D on TCM, but they are fun, nonetheless. Airing first is not a schlocky, low-budget horror movie, but rather a high-quality film with major star power directed by a major filmmaker — not necessarily the type of movie one might expect to have been shot in a gimmicky format. But it shows just how prevalent the trend was at the time that the Hitchcock suspense classic Dial M for Murder (1954), starring Grace Kelly and Ray Milland, was filmed in this manner. Or, at least the trend was prevalent when shooting began; by the time of Murder’s release, interest in 3D had waned enough that Warner released the thriller in 2D. The next film might be more in line with what may be expected as the type of story fit for a 3D feature: the mystery/horror flick House of Wax (1953). Led by Vincent Price, it is a remake of Warner’s 1933 title Mystery of the Wax Museum and directed by André De Toth, who also helmed the final feature in this lineup: The Bounty Hunter (1954). Randolph Scott headlines this Western that was shot in 3D but released in standard format, perhaps for the same reason Dial M for Murder was.

Them!
TCM, 9am
Catch a Classic!

One of the earliest of the “big bug” monster movies that arrived in theaters in the early post-World War II Atomic Age — and the ensuing anxiety that era and its new weapons delivered to audiences — also happens to be one of the best. The “Them!” in this 1954 classic from Warner Bros. are ants that have been transformed into gigantic monsters after years of exposure to radiation left over from A-bomb testing in the New Mexico desert. The film takes its time before revealing the creatures, which is good for a few reasons. For one thing, they are kind of silly-looking, although considering the effects standards of the day they aren’t too bad, and certainly there would be far more ludicrous creations hitting movie screens in these types of films over the ensuing years in cheaper movies with less creative talents. The filmmakers here take a great approach in not showing the ants right away in order to ratchet up terrific suspense and an eerie ambience. Them! is a highlight among today’s daytime lineup of films grouped under the theme of “Warner Gets Scared” as part of Turner Classic Movies’ monthlong celebration of Warner Bros.’ centennial. The other suspense and horror titles from the studio airing today are Doctor X (1932) and The Mystery of the Wax Museum (1933) earlier in the morning, with The Bad Seed (1956), Dead Ringer (1964), What Ever Happened to Baby Jane? (1962) and Wait Until Dark (1967) following Them!
