The Best of Les Dawson, Tuesday, 20.00, BBC4
Another comedy anniversary here, though a sad one as Les died thirty years ago this week, tragically just as he was enjoying something of a renaissance and we would agree with other that had he lived he could have gone on HIGNFY and QI and reinvented himself just like Bob and Brucie. Les is one of the rare comedians, we would suggest only Kenny Everett as another example, who was probably better on ITV than he was on the Beeb, his Sez Les series for Yorkshire in the seventies probably his best vehicle with its freewheeling approach, and despite spending over a decade at the Beeb he never quite managed to replicate that in the many sketch and variety shows he fronted. Still some nice stuff in them, mind, which we’ll see in this compilation from 1997, followed by him in more reflective and, probably, funnier form off-script.
